He longs to write about things like the Cold War, the Suez Crisis, the moon landing, Watergate. He misses the days when newsrooms were full of chain-smoking gray haired men -- even if he didn't experience them himself. His father had gone into business (much to his grandfather's disappointment) and did well for himself, so the family was able to send Mike and his siblings to college. Mike made the most of it, getting degrees in journalism and (at his mother's urging) business, with a minor in international politics. He wrote for the school paper (as he had been doing since high school), and became editor his senior year. He worked at small, family run newspapers after graduation until he had his fill of writing about Apple Festival princesses and the town council's debate over stoplights. He put himself through grad school, got a job at a metro paper and worked his way up from there. He made connections with the help of his grandfather, who still had a few friends in the business, and was adopted into the "old boys club". That helped him move from one paper to another, getting better assignments and more bylines. He learned to fight for the stories he wanted and even to take them from other reporters. Along the way, he met Denise Parker and fell in love. He proposed, she accepted, things were great. But Mike was married to his job and Denise felt like second-fiddle. She called off the engagement two years ago. Mike's never really forgiven her for that. Most recently, he got into a huge fight with his editor and another reporter, got fired, found a job in Tampa and decided he'd had enough of the snowy northeast.
